How do I participate in the contest?
  • Participating in these contests is easy. All you need to do is upload your images at www.canvera.com/betterphotography.

    You can also courier/post/hand-deliver your prints to Better Photography's head office in Mumbai. The address is: Infomedia18 Ltd, Better Photography, Ruby House, J K Sawant Marg, Dadar (West), Mumbai - 400 028. Tel: +91 22 3003 4603

When can I enter the competition?
  • You can start uploading your entries right away. The last date for submitting entries for the Better Photography Photographer of the Year Awards 2009 and Young Photographer of the Year Awards is 30 November 2009. For Wedding Photographer of the Year Awards 2009, you can submit your entries till 10 February 2010.
Does it cost anything to enter the competition?
  • No, there is no entry fee attached with any of our contests.
I'm an Indian citizen living abroad. Can I still participate?
  • Yes, you can. The competition is open to citizens of India (including Non Resident Indians).
Can I enter in all the themes?
  • Yes! You can participate in all 8 themes of the Photographer of the Year Awards 2009. For Wedding Photographer of the Year there are 6 themes in all.
Why can I send only up to four photographs in a theme?
  • To keep the competition fair and to invite a broad range of entries, there is an upper limit of 4 in all themes, for theme "Photo series of a single wedding" in Wedding Photography category, you can send minimum 6 and maximum 12 photographs.
Do photos have to be taken with a digital camera?
  • Not necessarily. You can submit photographs shot by any camera-film or digital, basic or DSLR.
Do you accept film images that I've scanned?
  • Yes, you can send film images that you have scanned. Remember to provide the details of the camera, lens and exposure.
Can I send a CD containing my photos?
  • No, we are not accepting entries on a CD. There are only two ways in which you can submit your entries : online or in the form of prints.
I have a fantastic shot, but I'm not sure it really fits a theme. Should I still enter it?
  • The themes of our contests are largely interpretative. As long as a photograph connects to a theme in some way, you can submit your entries.
How much image editing do you allow?
  • We recognise that digital photographs need some amount of post-processing to look their best. Hence, we will accept corrections or enhancements for colours, contrast and brightness of an image, or the creation of a panorama. However, any entries that have been excessively manipulated will be disqualified.
How big should my photographs be?
  • If you are uploading entries online, the digital image files should be JPEG files that have a minimum resolution of 1600 X 1200 pixels and the file size should not exceed 2MB. Entries in the form of prints should be unmounted and without borders. Prints should not be smaller than 8 X 10 inches or bigger than 9 X 12 inches. For panoramic entries, the shorter side must measure a minimum of 8 inches.
Do I retain the copyright of my images?
  • Absolutely! Every entrant will retain copyrights of his/her image.
Why do I need to be logged in to the site in order to submit a photo?
  • You need to log in before submitting the entries so that we can tag your entries with your profile. Your email id acts as unique identifier for the contest.
How do I know that you've received my entry?
  • Once you've sent your entry, you can cross view it in your "My Entries" page. If you can see it there, that means we have received it.
How will my photograph be judged?
  • Better Photography will appoint a panel of judges to determine the winning images. The parameters will include vision, composition, exposure, technique, message conveyed and the overall appeal of the image.
When will the winners be announced?
  • The first-prize winners, second-prize winners and honourable mentions for Better Photography Photographer of the Year Awards 2009 will be published in the January 2010 issue of the magazine.
    For Wedding Photographer of the Year, the results will be published in the March 2010 issue.
When I submit a photo to the photo contest, what rights does Better Photography have regarding my submission?
  • By entering your images into the competition, entrants agree to allow Better Photography to publish their photographs in print or electronic form in a future issue or issues of Better Photography, to use the pictures for editorial and promotional purposes without payment, for a period of three years from the date of declaration of results. The images will be reproduced with due credit to the photographers.
Are release forms required when submitting a photograph to the contest?
  • The entrant must be the sole creator of his/her images and must also own the copyrights and rights to reproduction of all pictures entered into the contest. It is the legal responsibility of the entrant, and not Infomedia18 Ltd, to ensure that publication of the photographs by Better Photography raises no legal claims.
I'd like to enter a photo that has previously been published. Is that allowed?
  • Yes.

How old can my photograph be?
  • There are no restrictions regarding when the image has been shot.
Will my entries be visible online to others?
  • No. This website only allows you to upload images. While you will be able to view your own entries, visitors of this website or other entrants will not be able to view your entries.
Will I be notified if my photo is chosen for the awards?
  • The winners of Better Photography Photographer of the Year Awards 2009 will be notified on 15 December 2009 and Wedding Photographer of the Year will be notified in the last week of February 2010.

    Better Photography Photographer of the Year 2009 The 8 first-prize winners of each theme from the Senior category will compete for the title of Better Photography Photographer of the Year 2009 through a face-off contest in Singapore.

    The Better Photography Young Photographer of the Year 2009 will be chosen by a jury from among the 8 first-prize winners of each theme.

I accidentally uploaded the wrong photo. Can I delete my entry and submit a new photo?
  • Once a photograph has been uploaded, you cannot edit or delete it. However, you can login multiple times to upload more entries in all themes till you've exhausted the limit of that theme.
I can't remember which photographs I've already submitted. Can you tell me which of my photographs you've received?
  • Once you upload a photograph, your entries will be visible in your "My Entries" page. You can click "view" and see your entries there.
I don't currently read or subscribe to Better Photography magazine. Can I still enter?
  • Yes, of course!
